Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren,

in der Erforschung der neurobiologischen Grundlagen von Demenzen wurden in den letzten 10 bis 15 Jahren enorme Fortschritte gemacht. Die Beziehungen zwischen den neuronalen Veränderungen und funktionalen Defiziten (wie etwa Defizite bei Sprachverarbeitung oder Gedächtnisstörungen bei Alzheimer Demenz) bleiben jedoch größtenteils im Dunkeln. Ebenso ungelöst ist bisher die Frage, in welchem Maße die funktionalen Defizite untereinander in Verbindung stehen.

Hinsichtlich des Zusammenhangs biologischer Veränderungen mit funktionalen Defiziten wurde weithin angenommen, dass zum Beispiel Benennstörungen von Atrophien relevanter cerebraler Areale herrühren, oder von einem atrophiebedingt eingeschränkten Zugang zu diesen Arealen. Doch solche Sichtweisen vereinfachen und reduzieren unzulässig das komplexe Verhältnis von biologischen Grundlagen und funktionalen Leistungen des Gehirns.

Am 24. und 25. Juni 2005 werden das Neurolinguistische Labor in Zusammenarbeit mit der Neuropsychologie, Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg i.Br., eine interdisziplinäre und internationale Arbeitstagung (Tagungssprache Englisch) mit dem Titel

"Cortical Dementias -
Cognitive Deficits in Alzheimer´s Disease"

durchführen. Geplant sind einerseits Plenumsvorträge international renommierter Forscher, andererseits freie Kurzreferate und Poster. An Themen sind vorgesehen:

Diagnostik der Alzheimer-Krankheit
MCI - Mild Cognitive Impairment
Funktionales Defizite der Alzheimer-Krankheit

Im Anschluss an die Sektion "Diagnostik der Alzheimer-Krankheit" (Freitag, gegen 18,00 Uhr) ist auch eine Diskussion über die Wirkungsweise von Antidementiva vorgesehen. Teilnehmer werden Neurowissenschaftler unterschiedlicher Disziplinen sein.

Enormous progress has been made in the exploration of the neurobiological bases of dementia diseases during the past 10 to 15 years. Nevertheless, the connection between neuronal changes and functional deficits (such as speech processing or memory deficits in Alzheimer Disease) remains largely unknown. As of yet unsolved is the question to what extent the different functional deficits are related to each other.

Concerning the connection between biological changes (e.g. atrophies) and functional deficits, it has been widely implied that, for instance, problems in naming objects may stem from an atrophy of relevant cerebral areas or limited access to these areas resulting from atrophy. However, such views improperly simplify and reduce the complex connection between the biological bases and functional performances of the brain.

The Neurolinguistic Laboratory and the Neuropsychology Lab (Department of Psychology) of the Albert-Ludwigs-University Freiburg i.Br. will be hosting the international conference.

The conference will be held in English language.

Part of the section "DIAGNOSIS OF ALZHEIMER´S DISEASE" will be a discussion about the evaluation of the pharmacological treatment of dementia (18,00 h), with neuroscientists from different disciplines.
